What Does the Bible Say About Being Lucky vs Blessed?

What Does the Bible Say About Being Lucky vs Blessed?

Have you ever heard someone say, “I’m so lucky!” or “I’m so blessed!”? These are common phrases that sound similar but mean two different things. What is the difference between lucky vs blessed and what does the Bible say about the two? Read on to find out.

What Does it Mean to be Lucky?

Luck has to do with the idea that something happened by chance. That you just happened to be at the right place at the right time to experience something good. It was not intentionally designed and happened by accident. For example, you are “lucky” you weren’t late to work because something in the universe made the drive go in your favor–lots of green lights and minimal traffic.

What Does it Mean to be Blessed?

Being blessed, on the other hand, is when something goes right or well in your life and instead of attributing it to happenstance, you give credit to someone. For example, you are “blessed” because the generous couple gave you a large tip for their dinner. Oftentimes, Christians used the term “blessed” to attribute the goodness or work of God in their lives. For example, God “blessed” you with a loving family–it wasn’t by chance but by intentionality through God’s will for your life.

What Does the Bible Say About Being Lucky vs Blessed?

Interestingly, the word “luck” is never used in the Bible. That fact right there gives a pretty good idea of what the Bible says (or doesn’t say) about being lucky vs blessed.

Luck Leaves No Room for God

To experience “luck” is to experience something that God is not a part of. If something good happens by coincidence, where is God in that experience? He is nowhere to be found. However, in Jeremiah 23:23-24, it is discovered that God is everywhere, all the time: “‘Am I a God who is near,’ declares the Lord, ‘And not a God far off? Can a person hide himself in hiding places so that I do not see him?’ declares the Lord. ‘Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?’ declares the Lord.”

And in Romans 8:28, we learn: “...that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” All the good things happening in your life are from God, not by luck.

God is a God of reason and intentionality. This means that everything that does or doesn’t happen is with purpose. The thing is, you may never know or understand what that purpose is. Sometimes, the purpose is something on a spiritual level rather than a physical one.

Blessings Come From God

James 1:17 says, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” Every good thing is a blessing from God. Even when other people do nice, kind, or caring things, the inspiration to do those things comes from God. God is love, goodness, and kindness. Therefore, anytime anyone exudes those characteristics they are being Christ-like.

While “luck” is never used in the Bible, “blessed” is used hundreds of times in many different situations. Take Matthew 5:3-11 for example. As Jesus begins his sermon on the mount, he uses the word “blessed” nine times!

What to Take Away About Being Lucky vs Blessed?

Knowing all of this, it is wise to say that “luck” is not of God and blessings come from God. As Christians, we can use this information to adjust our way of thinking, talking, and living. When someone good happens to you–or something bad doesn’t happen–you don’t have to wonder whether you are lucky vs blessed. All good things come from God. All good things are blessings. So, when you experience a blessing from God, choose to be grateful and thank Him for His hand in your life.
